We've used these squares
to indicate the leaf color of the plant. Obviously this would
be more intuitive if we had used a symbol in the shape of a leaf,
but we couldn't figure out how to do that.
The concept is fairly
simple, from top to bottom these symbols would indicate a green
leaf, a green leaf with a white margin, a green leaf with a white
center, a green leaf with a yellow margin, and a blue leaf.
The fact that there is no clean line between bluish green and
greenish blue, that yellow hostas will often be green in low light,
that variegation colors change with the season, that grayish leaves
may look gray-green to one and gray-blue to another, all serve to
make color classification rather inexact. In some cases, where
there is a major change in color during the year, we have indicated
it by using two squares.
Anyway, in theory, if
you are only interested in blue hostas, you can ignore all of the
listings except the ones with the blue squares.
If there is a little "F"
in the box, it means that the flowers are fragrant.
