Growing Quality Hostas Since 1979 Our first garden center, The Crownsville Nursery, opened in 1979, growing perennials and other plants for the local Annapolis area. In 1984 we printed our first catalog and started selling perennials, including 12 different hostas, by mail order. Then in 1986 we decided to go into hostas "big time" and printed our first list devoted entirely to hostas, a whopping 39 varieties. It's hard to believe that 'Golden Tiara' cost $12.95 back then and plantaginea was only $4.95. We have gone through many changes since then. We've moved our nursery twice, split our operation into The Crownsville Nursery, growing a wide range of perennials and ferns, and Bridgewood Gardens, specializing in hostas and companion plants for shade. We've also expanded our hosta list fairly substantially. We posted our first web site in 1998 and we mailed our last catalogs in 2008 when it became clear that we could do a far better job if we concentrated on the web site. Hostas come and go from our catalog all year long. This year alone there are over 80 varieties we did not offer last spring, and we dropped about the same number, some temporarily and some for ever. Someday I'm going to go through all of our old catalogs and count up all of the different varieties we have offered over the years. I'm sure it's well over a thousand, but beyond that I have no idea. I'm beginning to feel very old.

I notice that 'Vilmoriniana' is misspelled. If I recall, there may have been some confusion over the correct spelling at that time. Or it could be that I just can't spell. It wasn't a bad little plant, but it's very rarely offered now. |
